ISO Standards Are Set To Avoid Unprofessionalism in Vietnamese Legal Translation

New standards on legal interpreting have been published by an organization responsible for developing and publishing international standards (ISO) International Organization for Standardization.

Language service standards are maintained by a dedicated unit of ISO team members. The translation, Interpreting and Related Technology Technical Committee (ISO/TC 37/ SC 5) is based on five distinctive groups: interpreting, translation, terminology coordination and facilities, and equipment for interpreting services.

At the moment, Translation, Interpreting, and Related Technology Technical Committees are responsible for 13 published standards, including the updated version. Whereas, six new standards are being worked on.

Translation services, XLIFE files work, and conference equipment is all under the language industry standards.

ISO certification is a kind of obeying a set of guidelines, and these codes can then be used by companies in RFPs and customer proposals to reinforce entitlements regarding the service quality.

Language Service Providers (LSPs) and others who have the ISO certification may use it for their website to present themselves as honorable.

In April 2019, the current legal interpretation services standards were issued, claiming to be applicable to all the interpreters, LSPs and any intermediaries.

In order to regulate the legal interpreting services’ quality, Technical committee created these standards. It was to ensure that all are given equal access to law and justice and a fair trial is available for all.

Several codes and protocols for certain settings are practiced differently in different regions and are not dignified. Furthermore, in many countries, the trends are somewhat towards unprofessionalism. This could be because they do not have enough resources, and are not enough trained or aware of the threats of unprofessional legal interpretations. Technical Committee aims to solve these issues by publishing legal interpreting standard.

The capabilities of legal interpreters are also highlighted in the standard, like having knowledge about the certain legal domain, know the duties of lawyers, judges, judicial officers, prosecutors and interpreters along with interpreting, linguistic, intercultural, interpersonal and technical skills. Legal interpreting assignments workflow is also part of the standard.
